目前,国内用于玉米粉碎的主要机型是卧式锤片粉碎机。该机型尽管优点较多,但其缺点也比较突出,这就是能量消耗大、生产率不高的问题。为解决这些问题,多年来,在设计上也采取了不少改进措施,如加大筛板包角、设计水滴形粉碎室、设计偏心粉碎室、加强辅助吸风等,这些措施虽也有一定效果,但受卧式锤片粉碎机整体结构的限制,难以有明显的成效。另外，还有齿爪式粉碎机、立式粉碎机、水滴型粉碎机，齿爪式粉碎机其结构紧凑，体积小，可靠性高，但能耗大，对粉碎多种物料的适应性差；立式粉碎机生产率高，能耗低，无需吸风，换筛方便，有效地干扰或破坏了粉碎室内的气物环流层，避免了重复无效的过度粉碎，但结构复杂，价格昂贵，颗粒大小的分级困难，不适合于普通的场合；水滴型粉碎机粉碎室呈水滴型，粉碎效率高，能耗小，但结构复杂，体积大，制造加工难，工艺复杂；揉搓式粉碎机采用动定齿盘，依靠动定齿盘之间的相对的高速运动，使被粉碎物受齿盘揉搓、冲击，剪切，摩擦及物料彼此间冲击等综合作用，来粉碎物料。
